Basic Defence Drill's
1. Footwork & Recovery Drills
These drills focus on speed, body positioning, and recovering quickly to set up a legal defensive guard.
The 3-Foot Recovery Sprint
Setup: Place a cone 3 metres away from a stationary attacker.
Action: The defender sprints forward to the cone, then rapidly uses fast, small backwards steps to establish a legal 3-foot distance. They immediately jump vertically with arms fully extended.
Goal: Builds muscle memory for recovering quickly without giving away an obstruction penalty.
Shadowing (The Mirror Drill)
Setup: Two players face each other inside a 4x4 metre square. One is the attacker, one is the defender.
Action: The attacker moves laterally, forwards, and backwards at 80% speed. The defender must mirror their movements, keeping their chest facing the attacker and eyes on the waist.
Goal: Teaches defenders to use agile footwork to block an attacker's preferred path.
2. Interception & Hunting Drills
These drills train defenders to read the ball's flight path and time their lean or jump perfectly to win possession.
The Triangle Intercept
Setup: Three stationary passers form a wide triangle. A defender stands inside the center of the triangle.
Action: The passers throw the ball around the triangle. The defender must constantly adjust their positioning and sprint or leap to intercept or tip the pass.
Goal: Teaches the defender to anticipate passing lanes and hunt the ball safely.
The Channel Cut-Off
Setup: Create a narrow 4-metre wide straight lane down the court. One attacker and one defender stand inside. A feeder stands at the end.
Action: The attacker tries to drive down the lane to receive a pass from the feeder. The defender must use their body positioning to force the attacker toward the sidelines and cut off the pass.
Goal: Trains defenders to dictate where the attacker can run, reducing their options.
3. Match-Realistic & Tactical Circle Drills
Designed specifically for Goal Keeper (GK) and Goal Defence (GD) to defend inside the shooting circle.
Box Out and Rebound
Setup: A shooter and a defender stand near the post. A feeder stands at the top of the circle and purposely shoots to miss.
Action: As the ball leaves the feeder's hands, the defender must step in front of the shooter, hold a wide stance to "box them out," jump high to claim the rebound, and immediately look for an outlet pass.
Goal: Secures possession from missed shots and prevents the attacking team from getting second-chance opportunities.
The Double Team Lock
Setup: Two attackers (GA and GS) and two defenders (GD and GK) play inside the goal circle, with a feeder outside.
Action: The defenders must communicate constantly. If one attacker drives wide, the defenders must decide whether to switch players or stay tight to deny a direct pass to the post.
Goal: Improves defensive communication and tactical switching under match-play pressure.
Defensive Technique Cues
Body Position (The Mark)
Key Coaching Cue: Stay on your toes, keep your knees slightly bent, and position your body at a 45-degree angle to see both the ball and your player.
The 3-Foot Guard (Obstruction Avoidance)
Key Coaching Cue: Measure from the attacker’s landing foot, snap your feet back quickly, extend your arms straight up, and lean from the hips over the ball.
The Intercept (The Hunt)
Key Coaching Cue: Watch the passer's eyes and shoulders, commit early to the ball, and attack it with two hands whenever possible.
